Transition for Kids

We had a great conversation with the kids about our life here in Kijabe. In general, they seem happy to be here. We did some compare/contrast with life in Durham and life in Kijabe. They come up with the funniest things. Andrew said, "It gets dark at dinner time here." (When we left Durham, it was full blown summer, so the kids went to bed when it was still light out.) Abby said that what she loves about Kijabe is that she can play with kids all the time. Yesterday, her new friend, Jonah, came over afterschool and today, she played at his house. Its so fun to be in a walkable community.

Andrew seems to be feeling better, physically, but is struggling through the transition. He wants a lot of time with me, which, thankfully, this week I am able to give him. Our school counselor gave me a couple great ideas for helping him through the transition, so hopefully he'll get there & so will I.

Andrew has one friend who is in Kindergarten with whom he likes to play and we went to a preschool playgroup today so hopefully he'll begin to make friends and feel more comfortable here. We will set up his preschool room tomorrow and preschool begins next week (Mon & Wed mornings).

Writing about the difficulty of transitions reminds me of our sermon on Sunday . The title was "Survive or Thrive". The minister was mainly addressing the RVA students, but we all found it applicable (the text was Daniel, chapter one). Will we merely survive here (while we are away from parents, friends, homes, etc.) or will we see this time that we are at RVA as God-ordained (back to that theme of God's sovereignty). He wants us to thrive and live into the life to which He has called us.
